How to choose an engagement ring

Most people make four decisions, in roughly this order. You don't need to know the answers yet; this is simply a way to narrow the choice.

Set a budget you're comfortable with

There is no rule for how much to spend. Decide on a figure that feels right, then let it guide the trade-offs between diamond size, quality and setting. Because the prices you see here are for the setting, leave room for the centre diamond, which is usually the larger share of the total.

Choose the diamond shape

Shape changes the character of a ring more than anything else. Round gives the most sparkle; oval, pear and marquise look larger for their weight; emerald and Asscher cuts are calmer and more architectural. Pick a setting style

A solitaire keeps all the attention on one diamond. A halo frames it with smaller stones for more presence. A trilogy adds two side stones, and a diamond band carries sparkle along the shoulders.

Choose the diamond and metal

Natural and lab-grown diamonds look the same to the eye; lab-grown usually costs less for the same specification, while natural diamonds are rarer. Judge either on cut first, then colour and clarity. Every setting comes in platinum, white gold, yellow gold or rose gold, so choose the tone that suits your partner's skin and existing jewellery.
