Loose diamond FAQs

Buying a loose diamond

Everything you need to know before you choose your stone.

What are loose diamonds?

A loose diamond is one that has not yet been set into jewellery. Choosing a loose diamond first lets you compare stones on their own merits, then pair your favourite with an engagement ring setting made to fit it.

Should I choose a lab-grown or natural diamond?

Both are real diamonds with identical sparkle and hardness. Lab-grown diamonds let you choose a larger or higher-grade stone for your budget, while natural diamonds offer rarity and heirloom appeal. Our diamond guide compares them side by side.

Which grades should I look for?

For most engagement rings we suggest an Excellent or Very Good cut, F to H colour and VS2 to SI1 clarity. Within that range, diamonds look bright, white and eye-clean while leaving room in your budget for carat weight.

What does GIA or IGI certification mean?

GIA and IGI are independent gemmological laboratories. Their report confirms a diamond’s shape, carat, colour, clarity and cut, and states whether it is lab-grown or natural. Use the Certificate filter to show stones graded by either lab.

Can I see a diamond before I buy it?

Yes. Most diamonds include a 360° video, and you can book an appointment at our Hatton Garden showroom to view your shortlist in person, side by side and under different lighting.

How do I set a loose diamond into a ring?

Open a diamond and choose “Choose a setting” to browse our engagement rings, or book an appointment and our designers will create a bespoke setting. Every ring is handcrafted to order in Hatton Garden.
